A material is not a moral alibi
A field guide to the afterlife of things: what to ask before a material becomes a surface, a product or a promise.
Materials now arrive with their own press release. Recycled. Regenerative. Low impact. Bio-based. Each word sounds like a conclusion, as though an object can be excused before it has been used, repaired, lived with or thrown away.
Material Matters London, which returns to UNLOCKED Shoreditch during London Design Festival, is more interesting than that language when it lets the question remain open. Its programme brings waste-derived construction products, biochar-powered foam, regenerative biomaterials, timber and circular approaches into the same room. 1 The fair is not a verdict on any of them. It is a useful place to ask what a material will still allow us to do once the display has ended.
That question is not cosmetic. Materials decide how a room ages, how a product breaks, who can repair it, what can be separated from what, and whether the story of its making survives the sale. To call something “better” is not enough. Better for whom, for how long, and under what conditions?
Three materials, three tests
FRONT: can recovered matter carry ordinary responsibility? FRONT brings waste-derived bricks, tiles and panels to Shoreditch. The point is not that demolition waste can look charming when it has been remade. The point is whether recovered matter can take on the prosaic burdens of architecture: repeatability, weather, specification and use. FRONT describes its WasteBasedBricks as high-quality structures made from waste; its recycled-PVC façade panels are designed to be durable and fire-resistant. 1 6
Carbon Cell: can performance be re-written? Carbon Cell’s biochar-powered expandable foam is presented as a plastic-free alternative to conventional polymer foams: insulating, strong, lightweight and compostable. 1 7 The important question is not whether biochar sounds virtuous. It is whether a substitute can meet the demands that made plastic foam habitual without moving its costs out of sight. A material has to be judged in use, in failure and in its afterlife—not only at the moment it enters a moodboard.
The New Materialist: can a brief begin with a place? The New Materialist describes a process that starts with a specification, then explores territories and ecosystems for available biomass before developing and scaling a material. 1 8 This is a different kind of material intelligence. Rather than fitting a generic “natural” finish to a product, it asks what is available in a particular place, what can be responsibly borrowed from it, and what production relationships must be built around that answer.
Together, the three practices make an argument without needing to agree. A material is not made responsible by its origin alone. It becomes responsible through its service: what it can do, who can care for it, how it comes apart and what remains knowable about it.
The afterlife test
Use these five questions before accepting any claim that a material is circular, regenerative or better. They are not a certification scheme. They are a way of keeping the material story open long enough for the real work to show.

The last two questions are not utopian. ISO 20887 sets out design-for-disassembly and adaptability principles for buildings and civil works, while the European Commission’s Digital Product Passport programme is intended to make information about origin, materials, repairability, reuse and recycling more available to businesses, consumers, repairers and recyclers. [10] [11] The language is administrative; the implication is cultural. A material should not become illegible the moment it becomes ours.
A language that refuses innocence
There is a more demanding frame outside the fair’s contemporary vocabulary. In Aotearoa New Zealand, kaitiakitanga is a Māori concept commonly translated as guardianship and protection. Te Ara describes it as environmental management grounded in kinship between people and the natural world; associated practices include taking only what is needed and setting temporary restrictions, or rāhui, where protection is required. [9]
This is not a word for a London design fair to borrow, a line to place beside a recycled surface, or a claim that Material Matters embodies a Māori world view. It belongs to specific people, relationships and authority. But it exposes an error in the way material culture is often discussed: the assumption that matter is an input with a nicer backstory, rather than part of a relationship with limits, continuity and obligations that outlast the buyer.
If the material conversation is to become more than a new category of lifestyle virtue, it must make responsibility visible. Not as a badge. As a practice.
A small vocabulary that travels
Recovered content is not the same thing as a recovered system. It tells us something about feedstock, not necessarily how a product will be maintained, separated or reused.
Repairability is the practical right to keep an object in use: access to parts, knowledge, tools and a surface that can show a life without being treated as failure.
Design for disassembly asks whether components can be separated and adapted without destroying their value. It is the opposite of making disposal the easiest part of ownership.
A material record is the evidence trail: composition, origin, care instructions, repair pathway and end-of-use options. A passport is not a substitute for good design, but without a record the next custodian inherits a mystery.
The fair is not the guide
Material Matters does not need to promise a clean future. It is more valuable as a place to sharpen the question. The best material is not necessarily the one with the most flattering origin story. It is the one whose past, service, care, separation and record can remain in view.
Every surface has a past. The question is whether it also has a future that someone can use.
